Pioneering in Cardiovascular Research

San Francisco Heart and Vascular Institute at Seton Medical Center in Daly City is on the cutting edge of life-saving research.

The San Francisco Heart and Vascular Institute at Seton Medical Center in Daly City has long been a pioneering research center for increasing the accuracy and sensitivity of important diagnostic tests, developing and evaluating new procedures for treating cardiovascular disease, and testing new interventional devices and pharmacologic therapies.

Louis Manila, BSN, RN, RT(R), manager of clinical research and operations at the institute, heads a team of nurses and clinicians who coordinate the research initiatives that drive clinical practice at the medical center.

"We gather, analyze, report and utilize both short- and long-term data on patients who undergo cardiovascular procedures at Seton Medical Center," Manila said. "We're a big participant in the various cardiovascular registries, including the American College of Cardiology-National Cardiac Data Repository, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, National Heart Lung and Blood Institutes'(NHLBI) Dynamic PCI Registry, Genentech's National Registry of Myocardial Infarctions and CRUSADE."

Staff at the institute collect over 800 data elements on more than 30,000 patients who have had a cardiac cath or cardiac interventions at the center since 1978, including the first patient in the U.S. to have a coronary balloon angioplasty. On the surgical side, they collect over 500 data elements on more than 10,000 patients who have had cardiac surgical procedures since 1983.
